DJ Hero Talent Round-Up

Oct 14, 2009 at 2:38 AM -
With DJ Hero's worldwide release only weeks away, we thought that now would be the right time to properly introduce the in-game talent. For those in the know this is only a brief introduction to the men behind the playable characters, but for those who can't tell their Daft Punk from their DJ Jazzy Jeff, we hope this will give you an appreciation of the world this game is all about.

And because plain text is a little boring, we've jazzed it up (no pun intended) with video clips and pics. Enjoy!

DJ Shadow

The popular turntablist DJ Shadow has been working with Activision for months now, sharing his knowledge of record mixology with the developers of DJ Hero. Not limiting his involvement to knowledge-sharing, DJ Shadow has lent his likeness to the game, as well as a few of his mashed-up tracks.

Considered a prominent figure in the development of instrumental hip hop, DJ Shadow got noticed after releasing an album constructed almost entirely from samples. Not heard any of his tunes before? Then check out the YouTube video!

DJ Z-Trip

DJ Z-Trip is an American DJ, hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, best known for being a founder of the mashup movement. More recently, Z-Trip was voted top US DJ by readers of the DJ Times. Z-Trip's 2002 record "Uneasy Listening" was his first to receive critical acclaim, making album of the year lists in Spin, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Wired and XLR8R. His 2005 major label debut "Shifting Gears" was honored by Rolling Stone with four stars.

As well as being a playable character in the game, DJ Z-Trip features his work in the song list: Foreigner "Juke Box Hero", Queen "Another One Bites The Dust", and others.

DJ AM

Adam Goldstein, better known on the club scene as DJ AM, was an American DJ and musician. Almost a year after surviving a plane crash in South Carolina, AM sadly passed away during August 2009 in his New York residence, after an accidental drug overdose.

DJ AM had been a member of the rock band Crazy Town, and had worked on albums with well-known artists including Papa Roach, Madonna, and Will Smith. More recently, he had partnered with Travis Barker (Blink 182) to perform a live DJing/drumming set, something which had not been done before. AM's reputation on the club scene had led to him being hired for the ritziest parties in Hollywood. Among those said to have hired him are Leonardo DiCaprio, Demi Moore, Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez and Kate Hudson.

DJ AM will be a playable character in DJ Hero. Among his contributions to the game is the versus mix Gwen Stefani "Hollaback Girl".

DJ Jazzy Jeff

Jeffrey Townes, best known as DJ Jazzy Jeff is an American turntablist and actor, best known for his work with Will Smith as DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. As a duo, they made several gold and platinum-selling albums and singles. After breaking up, Jazzy Jeff formed the A Touch of Jazz production company and went on to become a prominent R&B, soul, and neo soul record producer. Along with DJ Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff is credited with making the transform scratch famous.

Jazzy Jeff joined Smith in the television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, playing a recurring character named "Jazz" who was portrayed as Smith's best friend; see if you recognise him from this YouTube clip!

DJ Jazzy Jeff lent his likeness to Activision to become a playable character in DJ Hero. His other contributions to the game include the versus mix Tears For Fears "Shout".

Grandmaster Flash

Joseph Saddler, better known as Grandmaster Flash, is an American hip-hop musician and DJ, credited as a pioneer of hip-hop DJing, cutting, and mixing. Three of his innovations (which went on to become standard DJ techniques) are the Backspin Technique ("Quick-Mix Theory"), Punch Phrasing ("Clock Theory"), and Scratching.

Saddler and five rappers formed a hip-hop group called Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 1978, which went on to become highly influential and successful. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, becoming the first hip hop and rap artists to receive this honor.

Grandmaster Flash is set to be a playable character in DJ Hero, and has contributed original mixes to the game.

Daft Punk

The only non-Americans of this list, Daft Punk is an electronic music duo comprising the French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. The duo first saw significant popularity in the late 1990s during the house movement in France, and saw continued success in later years, with "Harder Better Faster Stronger" and "Alive 2007" (a recording and album respectively) winning Grammy Awards. Prior to this, five of their works had been nominated.

Daft Punk are well known for their robotic costumes, which they don to merge the characteristics of humans and machines (though Bangalter did later admit that they were initially used due to shyness!).

Daft Punk are major contributors to DJ Hero. As well as being playable characters, they have their own venue, and have contributed 11 mixes to the game. No wonder so many of you are excited!
